Fire Extinguisher Inspection

If a fire erupts unexpectedly at your commercial property – Are you ready?

With United Fire Protection and our “One Company One Call” promise–you’ll have the peace of mind that your fire extinguishers are charged, tested, and in peak operating condition so you can defend your property against fire at a moment’s notice.

What Makes a Fire?

Fire is made up of four elements: heat, fuel, oxygen, and a chemical reaction. Removing even one of these with the right agent can safely extinguish a fire. Using the appropriate class of extinguisher at the start of a fire – when it is small and contained – can not only save valuable property, but more importantly, save lives.

How Important Are Inspections?

To assure that your fire extinguishers are always ready to tackle a fire, annual professional inspections are not only important, they are required by the NFPA. Annual inspections, testing, and maintenance conducted by one of United Fire Protection’s trained professionals offer a complete and in-depth look, maximizing fire extinguisher integrity. We check hoses for clearance, look for stripped threads, and ensure the pin is straight and working before reinstalling. We evaluate signage, extinguisher visibility, and access. When complete, dated inspection tags give you the assurance that the units are compliant and in optimum working order.

Annual Inspections Are Not Enough

Required annual fire extinguisher inspections prove effective, but monthly in-house inspections are also mandatory and ensure problems are mitigated quickly. During in-house monthly visual inspections, a unit may show damage, rust, or leaks. Below is a checklist for your own monthly fire extinguisher inspection:

  • Check that the fire extinguisher is in proper location, is visible, and accessible
  • Verify that the fire extinguisher signage is clear and visible
  • Ensure all labels and instructions are readable
  • Evaluate the locking pin and tamper seal for damage
  • Confirm that the pressure gauge is in operable position
  • Ensure the fire extinguisher is full by lifting it up
  • Look for damage to the hose, nozzle, and body – rust, dents, corrosion, leaks
  • Check the service date for professional inspection and maintenance (a professional inspection must occur once every 12 months)
  • Record inspection date and name on the inspection tag

In order to assure the unit is ready in case a fire erupts, contact us for repair services. Repairing the unit is one of the most cost-efficient ways to stay compliant and safe. At United Fire Protection, we are ready to quickly provide the service and repairs –basic through advanced—that get the extinguisher back in service to protect your people and property.

Fire Extinguisher Recharge

Fire extinguishers must be ready in case a fire breaks out. Even if your fire extinguisher has not been used, fire extinguisher recharging cannot be overlooked. When do fire extinguishers need to be recharged?

  • Immediately after use
  • Periodically throughout their life – every 6 to 12 years
  • Due to damage or environmental variables

The pressure gauge is a great indicator of an undercharged or overcharged fire extinguisher. United Fire Protection’s trained professionals have the tools and knowledge to ensure your fire extinguishers are fully operational.

Inspecting or Replacing Old Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are built to last many years. However, older extinguishers need special attention. Hydro-testing (or replacement) is required by the NFPA for extinguishers 12 years or older. This important test provides an enhanced look for elements that can cause the unit to malfunction. The professional inspection process provided by United Fire Protection looks for structural cracks or leaks and makes repair or replacement recommendations you can trust.
